While it may not quite match the scale of its predecessor, Berlin Gallery Weekend, London Gallery Weekend is a compelling statement of what the city's galleries have to offer. From early landscapes to later abstracts, Anne Imhof's 'Citizen' explores the body through frenetic scratchy paintings, a morose new film, and an installation made of crowd barriers. Dominic Watson's 'Vinegar and Piss' is a surreal takedown of the UK's descent into intolerance, featuring a massive galleon made from reclaimed children's playhouses. Savannah Harris' 'Gloria's' is a neat, experimental gallery transformed into an upmarket cafe, showcasing work by outsider artists and exploring the erosion of opportunities for artists and community social spaces. Keith Piper's show confronts racism and inequality through works from the past 40 years, while Elena Njoabuzia Onwochei-Garcia's 'Grown' features huge, theatrical paintings that explore deeply personal ideas of memory and identity. Oliver Beer's 'The Sky in the Cave' is a piece made inside an ancient cave in France filled with paleolithic paintings, while Gray Wielebinski's 'Bring Me Men' takes aim at how masculinity is constructed, reinforced, and standardized. Delaine Le Bas' 'Leap' is a chaotic blend of found objects, textiles, and new glass works, exploring themes of alchemy and witchcraft. Helen Marten's 'This Weather' features five films conceived as part of the artist's recent opera project. While London Gallery Weekend may not be as large as Berlin Gallery Weekend, it offers a compelling statement of what London's galleries have to offer, with exhibitions by artists from every corner of the globe and galleries ranging from fancy spas to tiny experimental project spaces.
